How to Create a Professional Author Media Kit

By Amanda Miller

If you’re an author hoping to secure media coverage through news outlets, podcasts, blogs, or professional speaking engagements, having an author media kit is essential.

Think of your media kit as a one-stop resource containing everything someone might need to feature, interview, introduce, or book you. The easier you make it for others to tell your story, the more prepared you’ll be when the right opportunity arrives.

In this blog, we’ll cover what belongs in a professional author media kit, how to begin building one, and where to make it available so journalists, podcast hosts, event organizers, and other media professionals can easily find what they need.

What Should an Author Media Kit Include?

Your Book Synopsis
Your synopsis should provide a clear and compelling overview of your book. Unlike your back-cover description, which is written primarily to persuade readers to purchase the book, your media-kit synopsis can offer more context about its subject, themes, intended audience, and overall value.

Aim to answer:

  • What is the book about?
  • Who is it written for?
  • What makes its perspective or story distinctive?
  • Why is it relevant to readers right now?

Your book synopsis should be concise, three paragraphs at most, and ensure that someone unfamiliar with your content can understand and easily feature it.

Author Bios in Multiple Lengths
Different media have different space requirements, so your media kit should include several versions of your author bio. Providing these options allows podcast hosts, journalists, bloggers, and event organizers to quickly select the version that best fits their platform.

Author Website and Social Media Links
Your media kit should include direct links to your author website and the social media platforms where you are most active. This gives media personnel and consumers an easy way to learn more about you, explore your work, and connect with your existing audience.

Rather than listing every account you have ever created, focus on platforms you actively maintain and that best support your author brand. These might include:

  • Your author website
  • Your Amazon Author Page
  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • TikTok
  • YouTube
  • Substack or another newsletter platform
  • Goodreads
  • BookBub

Make sure each link is current and leads directly to the correct profile. You might also want to include your social media handles beside the links so they are easy to reference in promotional posts.
Your website should serve as the central home for your author platform. Before sharing your media kit, review your website and profiles through the eyes of someone discovering you for the first time. Your branding, biography, book information, and messaging should feel consistent across every platform.

A Free Gift or Downloadable Resource
If applicable, include a free resource that podcast hosts, event organizers, or other media professionals can share with their audiences. This might be a workbook, discussion guide, book excerpt, checklist, or bonus chapter. Choose something relevant to your book that offers genuine value while encouraging new readers to join your email list or explore your work.

High-Resolution Images
Include professional, high-resolution images that media professionals can easily download and use. These may include author headshots, book cover files, and relevant promotional or lifestyle photos. Provide both vertical and horizontal options when possible, label each file clearly, and include any necessary photo credits or usage guidelines.

Additional Information to Include
The remaining elements of your media kit can be kept concise while still giving media professionals everything they need:

  • Essential book information: Include the publication date, available formats, ISBN for each format, retail prices, and direct purchase links. Present these details in a simple, easy-to-scan format.
  • Other books or published work: List your additional books, articles, essays, or other relevant publications to demonstrate your experience and body of work.
  • Previous media appearances: Link to notable interviews, podcast episodes, articles, television segments, or other press coverage. Prioritize your strongest and most relevant appearances rather than including everything.
  • Speaking testimonials: If you pursue speaking opportunities, include a few brief testimonials that highlight your expertise, presentation style, and ability to connect with an audience.
  • Book endorsements and notable quotes: Feature your strongest endorsements, editorial reviews, awards, and quotable praise. Include the reviewer’s or endorser’s name and credentials when permitted.
  • Suggested interview questions and answers: Provide thoughtful questions that introduce your book’s most engaging themes and your areas of expertise. Sample answers can also help media professionals prepare. Your answers should not read like a second book. Be sure to give just enough to answer the question but leave room for a natural conversation.
  • Author or publicity contact information: Clearly identify the best person to contact for interviews, review copies, appearances, and speaking inquiries and include a professional email address or other contact information.

Media Kit Examples:
There’s no single way to create an author media kit. The best format is one that feels professional, reflects your author brand, and allows media professionals to find the information they need quickly.

Your media kit might be:

  • A well-organized Google Doc using clearly labeled headings or document tabs
  • A professionally designed PDF that can be downloaded and shared
  • A public Notion page that organizes your materials in one accessible place
  • A dedicated media page on your author website

Where Should Your Author Media Kit Live?
Your media kit should be easy to find, access, and share. Ideally, it should live on a dedicated “Media,” “Press,” or “Speaking” page on your author website. Add a link to this page in your website footer or main navigation so visitors don’t have to search for it.

If your media kit is a PDF, Google Doc, or Notion page, make sure the sharing settings allow anyone with the link to view it. You can then include that link on your website, in your email signature, and in relevant outreach.

How to Use Your Author Media Kit
Your media kit is designed to support your outreach and make it easier for others to feature you. Consider including a link when:

  • Pitching yourself to podcasts, blogs, or media outlets
  • Applying for speaking engagements
  • Contacting bookstores, libraries, or event organizers
  • Sharing news about your book with local media
  • Responding to interview or appearance requests
  • Introducing yourself to potential partners or collaborators

You don’t necessarily need to send the entire kit as an attachment. Instead, include a link within your email and briefly explain what the recipient will find there.

For example: You can find my author bio, book information, headshots, suggested interview topics, and additional media materials here: [insert link].

Final Notes
Lastly, revisit your media kit regularly. Before sharing your media kit, test every link in a private browser window.

Update your kit whenever you release a new book, receive a notable review or award, appear in the media, or add a speaking engagement. Think of it as a living resource that grows alongside you as your continue to build your author career.
