In this rhyming picture book, a young anthropomorphic truck and his father are journeying for a family visit when his dad starts to feel worn down. An overnight trip to the mechanic fixes up Dad and inspires a career dream for the young automobile.

One morning, Little Truck asks his dad whether they can go visit his aunt to play. His dad readily agrees, but as they are on the trip, the father begins to feel tired. When he runs over a nail, he slows down even further.

Little Truck spots a mechanic and encourages his dad to go. They stay overnight to allow the mechanic to complete all the necessary repairs, and by morning all is right again. As they continue their journey, Little Truck declares that he wants to be a mechanic one day, to help other cars like his father.

The story touches on the worry that can come from an ill parent but doesn’t dwell on it: more time is spent on describing the father truck’s various issues and the repair process. While this keeps the story active, it misses the opportunity for emotional depth that could teach young children how to proactively cope with their feelings.

The illustrations are vibrant and similarly exude a positive spin on the situation, with a consistent focus on the sunny and beautiful setting and the smiling, can-do mechanic.

The Spectrum of Cars series is dedicated to children with autism and “other neurological learning differences,” but it is accessible for all early readers. This story does not include overt themes around adapting play or academics for children on the spectrum.

Overall, this upbeat tale describes helping a parent through a difficult moment, although its focus on mechanical problems over emotional response leaves potential depth unexplored.
