Author Barbara Peer Lutz wrote the text for My Cat when she was a young child in elementary school, and her new picture book possesses the gentle charm of its naive beginnings. With ink and watercolor illustrations by Dennis G. Lutz, this is a simple and sweet tale for the youngest of cat lovers, starring a huge white fluff-ball-of-a-pet known only (and lovingly) as “My Cat.”

Nicely designed and illustrated for the very youngest of readers, with just a single line of text per page, My Cat introduces readers to a little girl and her much-loved pet cat. The simple illustrations are rich with detail and introduce the many things a good-natured cat loves to do. We see the cat playing with yarn and a paper bag. We see her scratching her nails on a tree trunk. We watch her hiding among the spring irises and climbing a tree. The narrator promises the reader she is gentle when she strokes and plays with her friend, suggesting that cats only scratch when they are provoked or frightened.

Wordlessly the illustrations demonstrate everything a cat needs to be happy: a gentle tickle on the belly, a nap someplace comfortable, fresh food and water, a backyard to explore and an open door and gentle hug when it is time to come home after a long day spent exploring the world outside.

My Cat is a loving, if slim, introduction to the joy of pets for the very youngest of children.
