In Making B.S. Boss Moves, Dr. Lisa Lewis Ellis helps readers evaluate their thoughts and make adjustments to achieve “whole-life success” in the four R’s: Religion, Relationships, Resources and Revenue.
Ellis knows a thing or two about conquering negative thinking, which she believes keeps us from achieving success. In 2019, doctors diagnosed her with cancer, which “wasn’t on [her] 2019 vision board.” Now she writes, “I am cancer-free. I am sitting here today excited to move forward with a different mind-set and attitude…” That experience and her training as a life coach lend credibility to her efforts to help others achieve financial, relationship and spiritual success.
Ellis provides a step-by-step plan for readers to prepare their hearts and minds to release a prayer to God for their future success. She focuses on a reader’s “B.S.,” or “Belief System,” including thoughts about God, relationships, personal resources and more, backing up concepts with Bible stories and her life experiences.
Ellis’s upbeat, joyful delivery is infectious and fun, but her writing sounds too much like a live lecture, as in: “Come in, and grab your favorite cup of coffee or tea. Make yourself comfortable.” And her conversational tone can be confusing. Of Hannah, a woman in the Bible who desperately wanted children, she writes: “Once she got the word, she was able to eat, be filled, and succeed. Come on, come on. God blessed her…” Her mantra “ ‘F’ it. Do you, God,” where “F” stands for “Faithing,” and her use of B.S. for “Belief System” seem like gimmicky attention grabs.
Finally, an explanation in the first chapter clarifying the eight-day journey toward releasing prayer would have been helpful. Ellis mentions “day eight” sporadically, leaving readers to piece together how this prayer journey works and the full meaning of the eighth day.
Some revision would improve the book. Still, Ellis is uplifting and Christian readers especially will find encouragement to work toward achieving goals with a positive mind-set.
