In Do the Hard Things, an entrepreneur and leadership coach argues that choosing to face reality with discipline and act on one’s values is ultimately more fulfilling than slumping into comfortable avoidance and, eventually, regret.
In the past, many men used to meet complaints that some task was too hard or disappointment too dispiriting with a curt “Builds character.” Garnet Morris, whose life has included physical and sexual abuse, bankruptcy and divorce, among happier times, argues for re-igniting that ethic.
Morris warns that life will inevitably bring nasty surprises, and humans will often do the opposite of what’s good for them. To counter these challenges, he encourages readers to identify what values are most important to them (he offers a list of almost 100 to choose from). By always keeping these values in mind, he argues–with evidence from brain and body science and his own experiences—that one can change neural pathways, create healthier habits, and override fear and doubt, building resilience and fostering growth.
Morris is addressing fellow long-time entrepreneurs, but also the young parent, the kid with a burning idea, the adult embarking on the last stage of life. Reading the text straight through is valuable, but the Table of Contents can also guide readers to challenges of the moment (e.g., “Pain, Recovery, and Respecting Limits” or “Raising Strong Humans in an Easy World”). He provides memorable slogans, such as: “Values are the principles that remain when feelings fluctuate,” and “Resilience is not about becoming invulnerable. It is about becoming recoverable.”
Each chapter ends with a concise summary and a challenge to help master the subject matter. Quotes from contemporary voices such as James Clear (Atomic Habits) and Angela Duckworth (Grit) balance the obvious ones from ancient philosophers (“The unexamined life is not worth living.”—Socrates).
For anyone who agrees with Morris that “difficulty is not an obstacle to growth; it’s a requirement for it,” this manual is a valuable resource.
