For most people, the word “affluent” conjures up images of monetary wealth, but not for business coach Anne Arvizu. She defines affluence as “our inherent core state of receiving and giving,” achieved by nurturing our basic values.

Written in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Affluent Minds: Core Expressions for a Rich and Wonderful Life is targeted to executives and other leaders and offers alternatives to negative circumstances, such as naysayers and unforeseen crises, that commonly zap energy and motivation. Arvizu’s subtle mentions of the pandemic and its effects help freshen the message, but she wisely avoids making so many references as to render the book irrelevant in a post-virus future.

Affluent Minds is presented in three distinct sections that introduce readers to Arvizu’s basic concepts about transforming one’s mindset; offer “10 Keys to Any Endeavor,” ranging from determination to hope, each with a few questions at the end; and focus on how to rely on one’s core, or “Valueset,” to find balance and handle negative circumstances. The latter section delves a bit deeper than the first two, with more reader interaction and exercises promoting a healthy mind-body-spirit outlook.

Arvizu’s style is primarily expository, with an occasional example of a client, such as the one whose sinking business led her to make an uncomfortable decision and temporarily take another job. The author’s writing often shines: “It begins with a seed. In a vulnerable, quiet moment, a negative question seeps through. Then another. And another.” However, perhaps because of its brevity, this small, near-pocket-size book is more of an overview than a detailed guide. Statements like “Light the lamp in others by being a hope-filled leader” lack the specifics to show readers how to accomplish this goal.

Those looking for more concrete instruction on how to shift their leadership perspective might want to look elsewhere. But anyone seeking a quick read that can be easily finished in one sitting will find Affluent Minds an uplifting choice.
