Love and marriage are at the heart of Lloyd J. Schwartz’s romantic novel, but here the focus is on an arranged marriage that forces two young lovers to live separate lives until fate intervenes.

Against an impoverished farming backdrop in early 20th century Ukraine, Rita and Daniel have grown up together and are now teenagers in love. With his parents killed in a fire, Daniel is without means of support. As Rita’s father sees no future in their relationship, he arranges for his daughter to marry a wealthy merchant. With her new husband, Mikal, the couple and their extended family migrate to America where Mikal opens a successful lighting shop and Rita learns to embrace her new life.

Daniel also ventures to the U.S., and a friendly couple who owns a delicatessen takes him under their wing, treating him like the son they lost. Daniel studies to become a doctor while continuing to pine for Rita— until Daniel and Rita run into each other in New York and feelings are rekindled.

When Daniel discovers he’s the biological father of Mikal and Rita’s son Nathan, they all agree to keep this from Nathan, a decision that is tested later, as tragedy strikes.

Schwartz’s story draws readers in with an opening premise of long-ago family secrets and unfolds to reveal the protagonists’ history. There are humorous touches, as with the deli owner who labels one cut of corned beef three different ways, because “some customers just like to pay more.” Romantic interludes are well-written: sensual, rather than salacious.

More than a superficial romance, the book addresses pragmatic choices under dire circumstances, secrets kept for the greater good, and perhaps ultimately the advent of things that are meant to be.

Rich in character and storyline, with themes of love, marriage, family and friendship, and final revelations that bring the narrative full circle, It Might Have Been will appeal to readers who enjoy romantic connections, renewal, and the idea of everlasting love.
