At its best, Hansen’s latest poetry collection, Words to Breathe By, recalls the work of Imagist poets of the early 20th century for its succinctness, clarity of language, and openness of form. Both eschew heavy symbolism in favor of creating mental pictures within readers.

Hansen approaches this ideal in some of his work. The book is divided into two sections, the latter of which is called “Love Poems for Kristen.” In the unnamed former section, the emphasis is on natural scenes, as in the simple, opening poem “Enraptured”: “As the early orange sun/ begins to take back the sky,/ and the stars become invisible,/ I relish the fresh morning air/ and the calm, cool breeze/ that blows through my hair/ and fills my lungs.” Not only can we see the peaceful transition of night into day, we can also feel that breeze, which has an invigorating effect. A similar theme is present in “A Cool, Damp Coat,” which invests an ordinary article of clothing with restorative powers.

Unfortunately, Hansen’s imagery more often descends into sentimentality and cliché, as in “Morning Magic”: “I see the miracle of nature coming to life./ The early morning glow/ light iridescent jewels of dew.”

Additionally, imprecise wording proves confusing. In the Kristen section, for instance, “Where Are You From?” contains these lines: “What cross produced this treasure/ for the world?” Does “cross” refer to the crucifixion of Jesus? If so, death, even of Christ, is an odd analogue for a lover’s charms. If not, what do those words imply? In “More Than Enough,” Hansen writes: “I want to love you like God.” Does this mean “like we love God” or “like He loves us”? One is perfect, the other haphazard.

Hansen’s collection is best categorized as light, inspirational verse rather than sophisticated poetry. Still, lovers of strong emotions evoked in clear, direct language should find poems to appreciate in this collection.
