Why I Love… features author Alex Samtani’s thoughts about his life and the people he loves that are in it.

Samtani is seven years old and lives in the UK. In these pages, he lists the reasons he loves various people and experiences in his life. These reasons are often charming and childlike; for example, one reason he loves his “mummy” is that “She hugs me and says she is proud of me.” He loves football because “It is the best thing in the world.” The narrative covers moments that feel like nostalgia-in-the-making, such as Alex’s love for running and swimming in summer and the delicious foods his loving babysitter prepares.

The people Alex discusses in his narrative—mom, dad, grandparents, friends, teachers—will remind young readers of those in their own lives. However, sometimes the specifics undermine that effect. For example, Alex’s grandparents are retired to the Caribbean. “They give me…tasty fruits to eat.” He loves his father, in part, because “He looks like Pep Guardiola who coaches my favourite football team Manchester City.” Discussing his favorite subject, math, he notes “I won the Time Table Rock Stars competition at my school.” Such very personal details will make it hard for young readers to see themselves in the story.

Similar to the mix of narrative elements, the numerous styles of illustrations impact the story’s overall cohesion.

This is a promising idea and an admirable project for a seven-year-old. While the specific details of the author’s life will make it hard for other youngsters to relate to the contents, it will surely be a sweet keepsake for Samtani’s family members to reflect on over the years.
