In this third travelogue in the winning The Tales of Charlie Wags series by Sofie Wells and Ali Barclay, the titular pup wags his way to Paris.
The story is told in compelling rhyme. When Charlie wishes to travel somewhere, he wags his tail—“swish, swish, swish”—and he finds himself there. This time, he arrives in the Louvre where “The Mona Lisa’s eyes appear to watch his every move!” Charlie’s second stop is inside the soaring Notre Dame Cathedral, where colorful ribbons of light stream through its stained-glass windows.
The next stop is the Arc de Triomphe, and then, “Just down the street, his nose picks up a delightful whiff…” Delicious smells are pictured as wispy white, wafting through the air as Charlie sits outside a cafe, sporting a green beret and nibbling on a croissant.
At day’s end, after visiting further sites, the pup returns home with a souvenir; a model of the Eiffel Tower is added to his toy basket. The book ends with its familiar coda: “For now, he drifts to sleep, a peaceful smile upon his face . . ./He loves to see the world, but home is still his favorite place.”
Formatted similarly to the first two in the series, the book offers an illustrated map to mark the trip’s highlights and a brief description of each. In addition, there are more questions to spark young readers’ imaginations: “If you got to have your own masterpiece in the Louvre, what would you paint?”
The narrative’s steady balance of rhyme and cadence will delight little ears. And Sanna Sjöström joins the duo again with her skillful illustrations, delicate hues, and charming depiction of Charlie Wags, who is as expressive as he is irresistible.
In short, this is another gem to add to this lovely collection.
