In The Sweetest Getaway, two roommates who embark on a high-stakes heist, find themselves immersed in an adventure that calls for daring and nerve, but also promises reward and even romance.

As the story opens, Jennifer and Nari sneak into an elite social event hoping to win some well-heeled customers for Nari’s money-making scheme. But while Jennifer and Nari impersonate two socialites, Jennifer’s identity is revealed, and she flees.

For the “endlessly charming” Nari, it’s just another day in a life that involves “…constantly meeting new people, and making loads of cash from random schemes that took her all over the world.” For 37-year-old Jennifer, who dreams of owning her own surf shop, it’s a nerve-wracking risk that could land her in jail.

Nonetheless, the two are onto the next scheme: the heist of a shipment of a sugar substitute distributed by Essentrix Labs, Jennifer’s longtime employer— a company known for investing in harmful activities in the Congo. Soon, Jennifer and Nari are joined by other women who are eager to use the proceeds for themselves– but, more importantly, also to help the women exploited by companies like Essentrix.

To varying degrees, the women have much to lose, no more so than Lorinda, who is working to gain her green card. Despite the rising stakes, the group moves forward until a betrayal threatens to end their plans. Meanwhile, Nari is trying to resist her attraction to her ex-boyfriend while Jennifer finds herself drawn to Nari’s friend Amir.

This is a mostly light, Robin Hood-esque tale with a well-thought-out plot, fun details, such as Jennifer’s prized strappy stilettos kept in the original box and worn only for special occasions, and likeable characters. As the author writes in the intro, it’s a story where “adventures are thrilling, the girl-friendships run deep, and the hijinks are always available.”

It will engage women readers looking for an escape—and for characters and causes to cheer for.
