In a world marked by constant change, it’s easy to hurriedly react to what’s coming at us, rather than take control. In The Reset Mindset, author Penny Zenker argues that when we pause and reflect at difficult moments, we make better decisions and improve how we interact with our family, friends and workforce peers.

Most of the book centers on defining and describing her “Reset Practices,” which are: “Step Back,” “Get Perspective,” “Realign.” When done repeatedly, these habits create the skillset that allows one to keep on track when solving problems and open to new ways of thinking. Zenker describes the use of these practices in personal and business life clearly and conversationally.

She also shares personal anecdotes, often with humor, always with humility. No stranger to the need to reset, she writes, for example, about when she faced a perfect storm of hardship: unpleasant corporate changes, marital discord and personal financial implosion (she was a Bernie Madoff victim): “…[W]hat good would be accomplished if I were to wallow in self-pity?” she writes. “…my Reset Mindset enabled me to emotionally refocus, put this in perspective and pay attention to what mattered.”

Zenker smartly notes that reset isn’t just practiced by an elite few; it’s built into every sector of our world. For example, in sports we invoke timeouts to reassess our game strategies; in law we use the pre-trial discovery process to examine the evidence; in academics, we use peer reviews to assess content before it’s published. All these practices are intentional opportunities to rethink, reinvigorate and reprioritize.

Some pressed-for-time readers may chafe at the idea that slowing down their reactions and stepping back will help them save time. But the author offers enough compelling evidence that not doing so creates the opposite effect: loss of time, dwindling resources and burnout.

In sum, The Reset Mindset offers readers therapy, inspiration and a breath of fresh air.
