The Fashionable Mrs. Blue Has a Plan and a Clue aims to teach young readers to make the best of their circumstances through hard work, creativity, and improvising.
Mr. Blue wants to live in the country, but he knows his wife loves the bustle and window-shopping she finds in the city. As a compromise, he purchases an alpaca farm near town. When Mrs. Blue shears the animals to make felt, Mr. Blue constructs a studio for her new hobby. She creates beautiful clothing to sell to her friends from the city, and also starts a knitting circle to keep in touch with them.
Though Mr. Blue’s approach to compromise isn’t totally logical, his wife finds a way to make their new life work. Her creative approach is commendable. However, concepts such as moving out of the city and starting a home business will likely feel too amorphous or adult to make an impression on young readers. It will likely take the help of a grown-up to steer the conversation, in order for children to see how to apply Mrs. Blue’s resourcefulness to their own lives.
Still, colorful illustrations and cuddly alpacas will hold their attention, and the story teaches young readers about one method for making clothes.
Despite a plot that focuses on the technical aspects of alpaca farming and commerce, this story about Mrs. Blue is unique, light-hearted, and brightly illustrated—three things that will help it capture readers’ attentions and imaginations.
