These include, on Earth, inquisitive, tech-curious teenager Riley, his independent older sister, Marika, paranoid religious figurehead Ty Zimmer, and on Proxima Centauri b, “mushroom scientist” Dr. Tom McCreary.

Occasionally, the various narrative threads, settings, and differing character perspectives risk causing reader confusion. At these times, the lack of a main protagonist is most keenly felt. That said, the author’s ensemble approach to characterization is largely successful, ensuring readers remain engaged throughout.
