With The Chimera Snare: Reflections, authors S & E Black, a husband-and-wife team, offer a dark fantasy novel that explores a magical interspecies conflict.
Benson is a leader of the Celestine, a winged species that manifests its power by channeling energy. Disappointed with his son, Kumiko’s, lack of magical ability, Benson engages in a sadistic ritual to bolster the power of his family and his realm. Intended to create a powerful hybrid species, the ritual involves kidnapping, raping and impregnating a member of a rival species. The rape results in a hybrid child, Von. The novel then follows the adventures of Kumiko and Von as they grow into rivals.
Some readers will likely be turned off by the novel’s opening chapters, which depict multiple, extended rape sequences in unnervingly graphic detail. Despite their explicitness, these scenes feel emotionally and structurally incoherent. For example, while being raped, the drugged victim somehow visits her parents in a trance. They both disown her for her “defilement” while encouraging her to take control of her fate.
Likewise, the main characters don’t cohere. Benson can be compassionate toward the son he almost kills and can mourn the wife he drives to suicide. Instead of lending Benson complexity, however, these shifts seem to come out of nowhere. The same holds true for the intimacy that develops unrealistically quickly between Von’s mother and a witness to her ritual rape.
The novel’s worldbuilding lacks the detail and consistency readers expect from this genre. The realms the different species inhabit lack geographic specificity, making it difficult to distinguish one realm from another. The same lack of specificity holds true for the characters’ sorcery. The magic appears haphazard and unrealistic as there’s little explanation for why different species manifest their abilities in different ways. For example, Kumiko defies expectation by developing magical powers though the reader never understands exactly why.
Ultimately, this work requires revision before it will appeal to fans of the fantasy genre.
