Talon & Arrabella: The Last Thread is the fifth volume in Patrick Dandrea’s epic high fantasy series about the title characters’ fight against supernatural forces bent on universal destruction.

Although the story contains intense action at the outset and in the final scenes, it’s mainly an emotional addendum to the previous novels. Talon, the laconic elven ranger, and Arrabella, his beloved half-elven magician wife, are older now and fighting a protracted war of attrition against a sentient magical storm called Mystyx, who has taken an innocent hostage to fuel her enraged sorcery. As this conflict extends into months and years, the couple’s compatriots grow old and start to die off, leaving the protagonists to confront the looming cataclysm.

The story’s first section is largely comprised of emotional goodbyes to mainstay characters. The middle section is an interlude, consisting of Talon’s recollections, recounted to Arrabella in her sunset days, of his origins, first love, and greatest mentor. These passages are effective and affecting, easily the best part of the book. Dandrea’s dialogue is terse and serviceable, adding little to the characters’ portrayal; it’s the intimate storytelling between lovers that connects us to their humanity, anchoring the story and lending weight to the final battle.

Dandrea’s prose is solemn and formal. Each description attempts to suggest thematic meaning, but not enough attention is given to straightforward depictions of the settings and characters, which can leave the narrative feeling a bit abstract. While the author is a skilled wordsmith, his prose impedes the story as often as elevates it.

Still, The Last Thread fulfills its epic scope, never forgetting that the world itself is at stake. Although characters may read more like archetypes than people, they achieve mythic proportions due to the tale’s scale. While some readers may wish for more character dimension, any fan of earlier Talon & Arrabella books will find it an impactful and heartfelt addition to the series.
