Stephen K. Moore inspires readers to journey back to peace through a relationship with Jesus and reconnecting with our natural world in this motivational book for Christians.
Former atheist turned Christian, Moore addresses the epidemic of miseries that plague our communities, like loneliness, divorce, anxiety, “suicidality, substance abuse, addictions of all types, depression, and out-of-control weight gain” to name a few. With the tone of a close, loving friend, Moore encourages readers to return to a more natural way of living and to “look at the way [Jesus] lived.” He warns that “the impact of ever-present media and its tendency to isolate us, to prevent us from deeply thinking, to string us out on a never-ending flow of dopamine hits” goes against the Creator’s natural environment made “to nurture us.”
The author offers extensive evidence, research and resources for readers to examine their environments and their hearts and begin making better choices, such as limiting blue light and sugar, taking “a Sabbath rest,” spending time in nature and connecting with others in meaningful relationships.
Although Moore’s work begins as a warning against the dangers of our addiction to technology, which is applicable to any audience, he moves quickly into a deep discussion of the state of the American church and its failure to shine Jesus’s light into the darkness of our hurting world.
Moore’s writing is refreshingly full of candid humor and authentic humility. He comes across not as an expert, but as a loving friend. While a few typos appear on a handful of pages, overall Moore’s writing is polished, easy to read and flows effortlessly. He covers a substantial amount of information and also gives readers a helpful toolkit for change in his step-by-step “Un-Hacking Your Life Program—Taming the Digital Dragon,” included as an appendix.
Anyone interested in detoxing from technology will find Moore’s book helpful, although Christian audiences are more likely than general readers to connect with his expositions on faith.
