Cary Green provides the ultimate crash course in college and career preparedness for high school and college students with this Christian-oriented self-help book.

The author advocates for leadership skills training for young people seeking to excel in college and careers. He encourages readers to improve their “soft skills,” such as critical thinking, problem solving, written and oral communication, teamwork, time management, ethics and resiliency—skills that “employers report…as lacking in new hires.”

To that end, the book provides resources, templates, exercises and tools to equip readers for success in any field by helping them become more self-aware. For example, it offers lists of reflective questions (“What do you think your strengths are?”; “What are you passionate about?”) to help readers identify their perceived strengths and weaknesses; action plans then guide them to put strengths to work and to mitigate weaknesses. He often implores readers to seek God’s help.

Green candidly shares his own life experiences to illustrate key points, which helps readers connect with him. For instance, he shares a time when his lecture focused more on making himself look smart than on meeting the needs of his audience. Such vulnerability is disarming and encourages readers to accept failures and setbacks by finding the lesson learned in each event.

The author covers extensive ground in a mere 200 pages. His thoughtful, seamless connection of applicable Bible passages to every topic within the book helps validate his teachings and bolster his credibility. Christian audiences will appreciate his unashamed faith and the consistent message of honoring God’s will with our work. The only drawback to the book is minor: The clockwise numbering of the diagrams at the start of each chapter is confusing and would have been clearer with a left-to-right orientation.

This quibble aside, Green’s Success Skills is a must read for anyone looking to take full strides toward improving their academic, professional and interpersonal skills.
