This user-friendly, general information guide describes more than 150 common health ills and suggests when they might require outside medical care. It also has a crucial link to a phone app—Dr Maya—which aims to identify clusters of health problems that might lead to epidemics.

The author worked in intensive pediatric care in hospitals in the United Kingdom. Over the years, he noted numerous health symptoms that make people anxious, often leading them to rush to a clinic or hospital for treatment. But many conditions can be treated safely at home, and the book shares what to do.

Dr. Kadiyali Srivatsa has huge concerns about a culture of dependency on antibiotics, whose overuse has threatened their effectiveness when truly needed to knock out potentially serious infections such as MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus). His resource opens with a brief history of the development of penicillin and antibiotics and explains the mechanism behind developing resistance. He then devotes several pages to his Dr Maya app, vaguely explaining that the app teaches users “how we use the combination of three symptoms to differentiate minor illness from serious illness.” More precise elaboration would have been helpful.

The remaining bulk of the book is a catalog of various ailments, their symptoms and treatments.  Readers will find solid information here on everything from acne and shoulder pain to myocardial infarction.

Unfortunately, MAYA would have benefited from better editing. The format used for headings and subheadings is inconsistent and sometimes confusing, and the text contains spelling errors, word misuse and sentence structure issues. For example: “Knowing more than fifty present [sic] of people who died in [sic] Ebola epidemic in West Africa are healthcare workers . . .”

Such flaws lend an unpolished feel to the project. This is unfortunate, as they tend to undermine reader trust in the author’s authority. Nonetheless, those willing the overlook such issues will find useful information that should help them avoid seeking unnecessary care.
