In this memoir/self-help workbook, mental health counselor Kasey Compton recounts her personal story while guiding readers through self-discovery exercises to help them restore joy and contentment to their lives through self-love.
Although Compton was finally a published author, owned multi-million-dollar businesses and her dream house, and had every success in between, she felt numb and empty inside. “I thought that after all my years of searching for things—success, accomplishments, love, respect—I would find the fulfillment,” she recalls. “But I haven’t.”
As her second marriage was ending, Compton sought out a therapist to help her sort through her internal, mental mess. Here, she shares her journey toward healing in vivid detail, pausing frequently to speak directly to the reader—whom she calls “Seeker”—in special chapters marked “For You” that contain teaching and questions for reflecting, journaling, and healing trauma.
Using her sessions with her therapist as a framework, Compton provides manageable steps for readers to work through. She encourages readers to reflect on the Big Things—“the fence posts that shape our life”—and the Little Things found in between “that need to be recognized, because that is where the joy is found.” She leads readers to reconnect with and heal the hurts of their Inner Child, for “loving yourself is letting go of the feelings attached to the opinions of others.”
A gifted writer, Compton keeps the momentum and intrigue going throughout, weaving her thoughts and feelings into a beautifully descriptive telling of her life. Unfortunately for male readers, Compton’s attention is laser focused on her female audience. Men may, however, glean universal truths as well as a deeper understanding of the female psyche and societal pressures placed on women.
Ultimately, Compton’s authentic message of hope reaches for every woman suffering with depression and feelings of being unworthy and unlovable, giving them the nudge they need to finally begin the process of healing.
