In a clear and engaging manner, Hombre y sexo explores today’s most common male sexual dysfunctions, such as low levels of desire, painful long-lasting erections or priapism, and erectile and ejaculatory disorders.

As a trained urologist and sex therapist based in Guadalajara, Mexico, Dr. Albino Conteras Sánchez provides descriptions of treatments for overcoming these conditions, with a special focus on how this impacts the physical and emotional health of Latino men due to the performance pressures found in machismo. Though they’re expected to be sexually successful, men in a machista society aren’t encouraged to see doctors or psychologists to treat their sexual dysfunctions. This book is important because the author warns that a lack of timely treatment can affect a Latino man’s mental and sexual health for a lifetime.

In the first part of the book, the male sexual response cycle, as researched by Masters and Johnson, is broken down: arousal, plateau, orgasm, and the resolution phases. If these do not occur, the second part of the book explores various dysfunctions and their treatments.

Part two includes seven chapters discussing how sexual desire, or the lack of it, develops, factoring in causes such as obesity, hypertension, alcoholism, lack of exercise, neurological causes, and hematological conditions as common culprits. The author then provides step-by-step treatments that men can apply on their own or with their partners, as well as helpful medicinal treatments, implants, surgeries, and devices. To support his assertions, the author cites studies by Sigmund Freud, Helen S. Kaplan, Shere Hite, Alfred Kinsey, and several others, and includes an ample bibliography for further reading.

In addition to the author’s easy-to-understand writing style, the books’ graphics also help clarify complex processes such as erectile dysfunction. This well-executed medical book is recommended for Latino men, their partners and anyone wanting to learn more about these conditions.

Note: As technology and research advances, it’s recommended that this book be updated every three to five years.
