In From Stressed to Blessed, a clinical and medical hypnotherapist offers a primer for anyone interested in the how and why of meditation.

The author shares how she encountered meditation during her busy early adult life with four young children, intensive post-graduate study here and abroad, and more than one job. As proof of its efficacy, she recounts how meditation helped her remain calm, even after she fell asleep at the wheel and her car veered off the road, stopping just inches from a ravine.

She dives right into five simple steps beginners should take to begin daily meditation practice. These include gently closing the door on nosy pets and children; directions on postures and hand placement; and a variety of coping mechanisms to ignore intrusive thoughts. There are many quotes throughout from well-known mind/body/spirit proponents such as Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, and Dr. Wayne Dyer and religious practitioners such as Thich Nhat Hanh, Baba Ram Dass, and the Dalai Lama.

The author provides lined pages for journaling after a session, which she suggests should be 20 minutes twice a day, but “if your schedule has limited time for meditating, consider sitting for 5, 10, or 15 minutes. Some time is better than none!”

This book delivers what the subtitle promises: five simple steps. They take up 20 of the 90 pages, much of the rest being filler (a quotation sitting alone on a single page, the blank journal pages, a brief history of meditation, and a list of the author’s credentials). As such this offering could have easily been an article, rather than a book. Anyone familiar with meditation and looking for more than “Start Here Now” directions to beginning a practice from scratch will likely be frustrated with this volume.

Still, someone with an over-full schedule who wonders if meditation is really a valuable activity will find the author’s encouragement and the five steps to be clear and helpful.
