In Fake Out, two high school seniors find that maintaining a trusting relationship is a challenge when deep-fake photos and a video of one of them circulate on social media.

Blair Evans is in love with David Woods and ready to start a full physical relationship, but their planned first time together is interrupted by an urgent summons from David’s ex, who Blair calls the Ice Queen. The Ice Queen claims she is pregnant and, to add to Blair and David’s distress, people at school are circulating images of him drinking and smoking pot.

Things only get worse when a graphic video appears showing David hooking up with the Ice Queen, catching him, quite literally, with his pants down. David’s future college scholarships are suddenly on the line when the school is ready to expel him. How can Blair stand by her man in the face of such compelling evidence?

Fake Out is an engaging and fast-paced novel highlighting the dangers to teens of social media and manipulated images. The author effectively utilizes humor when describing Blair and David’s high school world. For example, the Ice Queen chooses who is in and who is out and leads a mean girl group called “the Things” who dress in coordinated outfits and “are predictably obedient, bobbing their heads at the end of the Queen’s sentences like human exclamation marks.”

While some of the storyline feels far-fetched—for example, the vindictive approach school administrators take over disciplining David—the book effectively shows the dangers of social media and its real-life consequences for teens. Content includes smoking, drinking, teen pregnancy and sexual relationships.

Fake Out can be read as a standalone, however the characters have appeared in Farber’s prior novel, Ice Queen, and readers may wish to start there.
