Sandy Shaw has written an engaging and lively picture book that answers that timeless question of childhood: where does the bus driver go while all the children are at school? Brought to life with imaginative glee and a generous and lively sense of possibility, Do You Know Where the Bus Driver Will Go? is an enjoyable picture book for emerging readers.
One suspects that Alec, the star of this story, is the type of young man who is curious about everything. Alec’s question of the day is this: “Where do you think my bus driver goes after he drops me off at school? Do you think he takes a rocket ship to the moon?” Alec continues to wonder: Does he hop into a time machine and visit Abraham Lincoln? Does he rehearse with his rock band or surf a big wave in Hawaii? Does he turn into a superhero or take the daytime clown shift at the circus? Alec summons endless ideas to his mind, each one more wonderful than the last. Finally, he asks his new friend Phillip what he thinks. It turns out Phillip’s Dad is a bus driver, and Phillip knows the answer to Alec’s question: if all bus drivers are just like his Dad, they take a nap while children are at school.
With engaging and bright illustrations by Eumir Carlo Fernandez, Do You Know Where the Bus Driver Will Go? celebrates the boundless and optimistic imagination of children, and Shaw ends her story with warm humor.
