Devil’s Name is an engaging story about an attorney who represents a transgender teen.

While this is the third in a series, Devil’s Name can stand alone. The story follows Jessica Fischer, attorney in Ashton, Georgia, as she tries to help Alexander, a transgender teen who wishes to change his name before applying for college. They face challenges not only from some members of Alexander’s family but also from the judge, turning what should be a straightforward process into an emotionally fraught situation.

Along the way, Jessica must also deal with an unexpected development in her personal life, complicating her relationship with boyfriend Bobby.

The story features well-developed characters. Jessica is passionate and liberal, eager to jump in and defend those who are different in her small, conservative town. In some conversations with locals, she must hold herself back from confronting their remarks, knowing it’s not always helpful.

Alexander is intelligent and perceptive, making a powerful case for why he wants his new name on college paperwork (so that he’s not housed in a women’s dorm or must explain why his name and appearance differ). To his mother’s annoyance, he swears and becomes increasingly upset as complications ensue.

Jessica’s older, conservative assistant Diane eagerly shares her opinions while offering firm advice in a crisis. And Jessica’s reporter boyfriend Bobby is caring and supportive, while also able to explain the other side of the argument in ways Jessica appreciates.

The plot unfolds smoothly, the complications to Alexander’s case emerging as a surprise but understandable given the environment. Jessica uses every resource to fight them, but is reminded that the law, no matter how clear, is represented by human beings, with their own prejudices and beliefs. The subplot concerning Bobby is compelling as her independence creates a rift after a crisis.

All told, readers will enjoy the author’s easy, flowing style, fully fleshed-out characters, and all-too relevant story.
