The siren song of modern manifest destiny and the weight of familial grief collide in Horatio R. Potter’s literary novel, which stylistically examines Montana’s sprawling history and rapidly changing present.

Horatio R. Potter’s narrative immediately focuses on the interiority of his characters. Traditional dialogue tags are absent, emphasizing how each person’s singular voice reflects their identity and motivations.

Father-daughter duo Beth and Buck McCafferty, the novel’s heart, are irrevocably marred by the death of their mother and beloved wife, Jane McCafferty. As one of the original homesteaders in their community, Buck is determined to ward off the constant stream of East Coast business vultures and capital-hungry tech tycoons desperate to buy his land.

Other key characters include Lucille, a bartender and the long-suffering girlfriend of Abe Carver, an East Coast defector and miner. They are depicted as not only a dysfunctional couple with trust issues, but also as a clash of needs and unhealed wounds. Abe craves the back-breaking physicality of mining, but trauma connected to his emotionally abusive father, a high school sexual encounter, and an accident in a Nevada mine push him to seek answers in liquor. Meanwhile, Lucy is tired of Abe’s cycles of self-destruction and wishes she could escape the monotony of small-town existence.

Immersive landscape descriptions, rich sensory details, and thorough scenes of ranching procedures reflect Potter’s 33 years of experience as a Montana cattle rancher. Interpersonal struggles are written with poetic insight.

While Potter generally balances the cast of characters with skill, new players introduced halfway through the novel lack well-rounded character arcs; for example, Damien Dwyer, a finance shark who cut his teeth in the world of New York banking, is defined by his all-consuming obsession with power and cruelty, his character lacking nuance.

Nevertheless, Potter delivers striking emotional depth grounded in authenticity and realism. Readers seeking stories that eschew the hollow, melodramatic pageantry of slick Hollywood shows like Yellowstone will appreciate this novel of emotional excavation.
