Tonally and thematically reminiscent of landmark science fiction releases like John Varley’s Gaea trilogy, Larry Niven’s Ringworld, and Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama, Daniel Rirdan’s latest novel reads like an unearthed ‘70s classic.
More than 2000 years after tens of thousands of Hellenistic Age Earthlings boarded a celestial ark carrying the planet towards a mysterious destination, the population living inside of Areta has no idea they’re in a colossal spaceship hurtling through space.
The story revolves largely around Aretans Angora, a prominent scholar on antiquity, and Sargon, a millwright whose inquisitive nature has gotten him in trouble with a governing body that shuns any thoughts of invention and innovation. When the unlikely duo begins discovering the world’s true origins — as well as its predestined fiery end once it reaches its terminus — they realize that they must find the mythic Bridge of Heaven, the path to humankind’s salvation, before it’s too late.
There’s much to appreciate here. The world-building, replete with towering ziggurats, is exceptional. The description is rich, focused, and immersive throughout: “…he noted the tall palms swaying gently overhead, their thick date clusters gleaming in the final hour of daylight. It was twilight, when inky shadows stretched long, and amber light bathed the reddish-brown earth in an ethereal glow.”
The main characters are all deeply portrayed with clear motivations, fears, and flaws. Lastly, the scientific speculation is fertile. For example, the women have been genetically engineered to be much larger than their male counterparts.
The narrative also has a few minor downsides. The author spends too much time on tangential plot threads—e.g., Sargon’s multiple design changes to his flying machine, his daughter’s food wagon venture, etc.—which slows momentum. Also, the ending—while largely satisfying—feels rushed and could have been more impactful.
Such flaws aside, science fiction fans will enjoy this epic story about humankind’s millennia-long journey through deep space to sanctuary.
