An American Nurse in Paris is an exciting historical novel set in WWI France. In this story, journalist Alice Simmons attempts to break into the all-male world of war correspondents but faces challenging obstacles.
The story begins in American military press corps headquarters, where Alice, 24, tries to convince Major Richard Martel to grant her press credentials. She’s a trained nurse and journalist, hoping to cover the medical side of the war outside of Paris. Although male journalists are quickly granted credentials, the sexist major initially refuses Alice’s request, then offers to reconsider at a “private meeting.” Later that night, after the meeting, Martel and another man attempt to rape her while she’s walking home. In defending herself, she injures the men.
To explain their injuries, Alice’s attackers accuse her of leading an espionage ring, which could result in her possible imprisonment and even execution. Meanwhile, Alice joins an American hospital treating wounded troops, and her journalist mentor, now in the military press corps, tries to help clear her name and bring her attackers to justice. Alice also copes with feelings of guilt over her sister’s accidental childhood death.
As the novel unfolds, Alice gains the respect of doctors, nurses, and wounded for her skill and courage. She also finds material for articles about the war effort, and the possibility of romance.
Alice’s initial naiveté in meeting privately with the major is difficult to believe, given his previous, obviously leering behavior. Yet she soon becomes a fascinating character, fiercely determined to achieve her goals. The novel is filled with action and suspense, from the violence of attempted rape to rescuing the wounded to the riskiness of medical procedures. There are also quieter moments, such as when Alice forms a reading group of wounded soldiers who discuss The Wizard of Oz.
Readers looking for a novel with well-drawn characters facing impossible odds, as well as covering lesser-known elements of WWI, will enjoy this book.
