What opens as a romp of raucous softball buddies evolves into a tender epiphany on life’s meaning and purpose in this testosterone-heavy story.

Set in Alabama in the early 2000s, this “mostly true” book runs along in stream of conscious style as told by Ben, who is 40 and shares a highly sensual relationship with his pregnant girlfriend, Donna. Early on, he tells readers, “I’m doing this on the fly. Your guess is as good as mine how this book turns out.”

As he rambles on about topics from softball to UFOs to religion to fishing, Lawrence engages in some crude guy talk and details, but also sprinkles in amusing commentary. When he ponders why men in some cultures could possibly want more than one wife, he comments, “It would be like locking Ann Coulter, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi in a room. It would be one big catfight.”

As the seat-of-the-pants story progresses, it makes a sudden serious shift after Donna has a devastating accident late in her pregnancy. Fearing that she won’t survive, Ben shows his vulnerability and does some deep, introspective soul-searching about what is truly important in life.

This book is written without chapter divisions or any apparent planned direction and—make no mistake—the crudity can be off-putting (eg: “What’s up, Whatley?” “Not my dick, that’s for damn sure. I think Denise put a No Trespassing sign on her poo nanny”). It also dulls down with some pedestrian (and sometimes juvenile) poetry. Yet it is unfailingly honest in detailing the author’s escapades and flaws, as if he is discussing each day with a trusted friend.

Most surprisingly, the narrative grows on you as the author is shocked into emotional vulnerability when tragedy strikes. Overall, this unique approach should prove an oddly enjoyable read for those who aren’t easily offended by raunchy language.
